Tuesday's Tip -- Sunrise Calendar and Evernote

July 2017 update : Sunrise Calendar was discontinued.  After some trial and error I found an alternative.  You can find the post here.

A few months ago I was looking for a new calendar app for my ipad that would integrate with my Google calendar; I tried a couple out but ended up sticking with Sunrise Calendar.

Here is the month view:

Week view:

Sidebar details included in the image below:

  1. These are the Google calendars that are attached to this calendar.
  2. This is my Facebook account; it shows birthdays and events.
  3. This is my Evernote account.
  4. Preferences (more detail on this below).
  5. Toggles the Sidebar on and off.

In each of the sections above (1, 2, and 3) you can use the check box to toggle your calendars on and off.

#4 Preferences detail:

The Accounts tab is where the magic happens.  When you first setup your account you will need to go to the Accounts tab to connect your other accounts.

The first image below lists the accounts that you can connect.  Once you connect your accounts you can see what you have connected by scrolling down to the bottom (the 2nd image below).

My favorite part about this calendar is that I can see all of my Evernote Reminders!  You can also drag and drop your reminders to different times or dates and it is updated in Evernote.  If I don't get all of my reminders completed today I will drag and drop them to another day that I think I will have time to get to them.  I have this calendar on my desktop, my Android phone, and my ipad mini.

I have not found a way to change the colors in the Sunrise calendar so I make any color changes on my Google calendar and then the changes sync to the Sunrise calendar.

The only thing I  found that I do not like is when you click on an Evernote Reminder there is a link to open the note in Evernote.  When I click the link it takes me the web version of Evernote and to a new note not my Reminder.  I wish it would open the correct note right in my Evernote desktop program.

You can see my first post about Evernote Reminders here and here.

As always if you have any questions please post here or send me an email at sthomas51004@gmail.com.

Happy ancestor hunting!

The Great Genealogy Shape Up of 2018!

For most of 2017, I spent my genealogy time cleaning up my database in Legacy Family Tree.  I'm still working on cleaning up messes from when I first started my family tree.  For 2018, I plan to continue cleaning up my database.  I would also like to finish adding all Find A Grave information to my database as well.
Find A Grave is a great place to find leads to research.  Legacy makes it very easy to find everyone in your database who do not have Find A Grave memorials.

Click the drop-down arrow on the Find A Grave icon and it gives you the following options:

I selected create a list of people without a Find A Grave Memorial and I got a nice LONG list of people.  From this list, I have been able to find more ancestors to research and add to my database.
My other goal for 2018 is to find the people in my database who do not have a source {yes, I said without a source.  Gasp!} Legacy also makes it very easy to find these people.  You want to click on Search {in the image of the…

Goodbye Evernote, Hello OneNote

What?  I'm leaving Evernote behind!
As most of you know I have been a huge Evernote supporter from the beginning and I have had a paid membership from the beginning {until October 1st}.There has been a lot of talk about Evernote not lasting much longer because they have been making a lot of changes and letting people go.That got me thinking about what I would do if they did cease to exist.I started looking at all of my options and the best option, for me, is OneNote.I already have it on my computer and it is free.I can use OneNote on my desktop, laptop, phone, and table all for free.I can still use tags {a bit different than what I am use to but it works and I am finding that I really don't need that many tags}.I can still search for things and actually find what I am looking for.I can still clip stuff from the web using the OneNote clipper.I'm currently working on moving notes from Evernote to OneNote. It can be a bit tedious but the process has forced me to look at my note…
